My mother died May 27, 2014. Mother’s Day has been bitter-sweet ever since that day. Now, I live with memories, knowing one day I will be reunited with her (and Daddy) in heaven. Some of you can relate, as you also have only memories of your mother.
I sat by my mother’s bedside on her last day on earth and read Scripture and sang hymns, mostly humming the hymns. She was 88 years old and a Jesus follower, who was ready to go home. I’m sure I never said enough “thank yous” to her as I was growing up, but a few years before she died, I wrote some of my thankful thoughts, printed them on decorative paper, framed them, and gave it to her as a Mother’s Day gift. Perhaps you can relate to these feelings and thoughts about your mom, too.
Thanks, Mom
You gave me birth, not knowing if I was girl or boy,
In the heat of July without air conditioning
Or other modern conveniences we now enjoy.
Thanks, Mom
I’m sure you lost much sleep taking care of me
’Making sure I was fed, comfortable, and safe.
Thanks, Mom
Then our family increased with my brother, David.
Too soon he left your arms for God’s eternal arms
And left your heart filled with a mother’s grief.
You continued to care for me, I’m sure it was not easy.
You nurtured and loved me in those early years.
Thanks, Mom
You taught by example how to deny self and think first of others,
As you reared me along with two brothers.
Then finally, along came the sister I always wanted.
Thanks, Mom
I learned to appreciate the things of nature,
Watching you raise plants and animals,
And put homegrown food on our table.
Thanks, Mom
Your life was based on God’s Word and built upon prayer,
Prayers for you children wherever we were.
Thanks, Mom
Today, I’m praising God for your life,
Knowing what I am today
Is because of your constant love and prayers for me.
Thanks, Mom

“Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all. Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate” (Proverbs 31:29-31).
